Sri Kapileswara Swami Temple

Sri Kapileswaraswami Temple is one of the most famous temple in Tirupati this temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva. This temple is located about 3 kilometers to the north of Tirupati, which is at the foot of the Tirumala Hills. The sacred waterfall called Kapila Teertham (also known as Alwar Teertham) is located here. Annual Brahmotsavams and festivals like Vinayaka Chaturthi, Mahasivaratri, Skanda Shasti and Annabhishekam are performed here with great pomp and splendour. It is located at the distance of 2 km from Tirupati Central Bus station and 3 km from Tirupati Railway station. The temple derives its name through remembering the name 'Kapila Maha Muni', who received the “Shiva-Parvati” Divya Darshan, blessed for his devotion and sacrifice


History of Sri Kapileswara Swamy Temple

According to the history, this temple derives its name from Maharshi Kapila, who immersed himself in ardent Shiva Pooja to satisfy the Lord. With the unswerving devotion of Kapila Muni, the Lord Shiva and Parvati presented themselves at this location and blessed him. During this time the Kapila Lingam pierced through the ground, presenting itself, when the seven worlds were instantly devotionally involved with this Linga. Greatness of Lord Sri Kapileswara was mentioned in the Kulothunga Chola inscriptions. These are the most ancient inscriptions among all the inscriptions found in the temple and belong to the 10th century.On the auspicious occasion of full moon day of the Karthika month, all the teerthas( holy water springs) of the three worlds of heaven, earth and underworld converge in this sacred Kapila Teertham.
